Grooming tips for eyes and muzzle area

Further tips on grooming your Yorkshire Terrier.

Here we look at methods that can be used to helping the hair on the muzzle of your Yorkie to grow in the right direction. For many of us our Yorkies can look a bit of a ‘hot mess’ at times and certainly in between visits to your groomer but hopefully this will give you some practical advice in getting the muzzle hair growing in a tidy downwards direction. We all want our Yorkies to look perfect, but this is not always easy and takes commitment on a daily basis. A poorly groomed little Yorkie face can take away the ‘baby’ look that Yorkshire Terriers are so well known and loved for.

The under-eye hair can be controlled somewhat with gel when your Yorkie puppy is young and it takes consistency (daily) to succeed in keeping the hair in place. The issues with this is controlling your wee wiggly Yorkie which is best achieved by holding the hair under the chin and using baby talk to keep your puppy still. Be careful with any product that you apply and use a very small amount to avoid any getting into the eyes. The muzzle hair can then be gently combed on a daily basis to train it to lie correctly around the nose – try to approach from the sides of the face with your left hand over the eyes as this will give you more control when applying the product. It will take some time to for your Yorkie puppy to adjust but sometimes using one word such as “eyes” will become a trigger to have them sit still especially if it is done at the same time daily.

If you choose to have the hair trimmed in the inner corners of the eye it must be done regularly and should be done by your groomer. Any eye boogers can be gently cleaned daily by using the soft round cleansing pads used for eye makeup, soaked in warm water. If eyes show any sign of constant watering or excessive mucus – have your vet check them out.

Any staining can be addressed by eliminating beef products, treats with added food colouring and changing their diet to lamb or chicken. By eliminating these products from their diet this will prevent the red yeast forming in their gut. This will then curb or stop the staining you see in the tear duct area, around the vulva or penis, in their urine and the staining that appears on the hair on their pads of their feet due to them licking their feet (saliva) and also thru the sweat glands in their feet. A good product to assist with this is Mighty Munch (available online) which is a probiotic powder sprinkled on the food daily. It does take some time to work so do not give up.
