Health concerns in a Yorkshire Terrier

Whilst they are generally healthy little dogs, all responsible breeders should screen their breeding lines for.

  1. Eye anomalies
  2. Luxating Patella
  3. Liver Shunts – Portosystemic Shunt
  4. Teeth and Enamel issues – Amelogenesis Inperfecta
  5. Overbite – Jaw issues

As they are such small animals, care should also be taken to avoid tracheal collapse.

How much should you feed your Yorkie?

As with us humans, this may be impacted by their size, activity level and metabolism.  However, remember, they are only small, and that gives a guide as to how big their tummies are.  Keep this in mind when you are feeding your Yorky.   Yorkies benefit from omega oils in their diets as this is a natural anti-inflammatory that can help support their skin, kidneys, joints and heart.

Yorkie Behaviour

Small in size but with oversized personalities, they really do think they are larger than they really are. Whilst some can bark at “the wind”, they can be taught to keep quiet, and this makes them a great dog for a smaller or more dense living environment, e.g apartments.  They do, however, need mental stimulation and play.

Training a Yorkshire Terrier

It can be done, and they do have remarkable intelligence.  Training does depend on the dog, and many say that they are “easy to train and trainable”. However, others may struggle slightly.   They can be wilful, and some are not food-motivated, but positive reinforcement with a lot of praise will support your progress. Chat to the groups we have shared on this page about our regular Yorkie meet-ups for great socialisation opportunities.

Their Coat Care

In the show ring, Yorkies are often left with a very long coat of hair; this may not be practical in a busy household.  If you do keep the coat long, daily brushing is needed to prevent knots and tangles. A short “puppy cut” may only require a few brushes a week.  Professional grooming on a regular basis will help maintain their appearance.  It is good to get your Yorkshire terrier puppy used to going to the groomers.

Eye Care

A Yorkshire Terrier can develop “eye stains” in the corner of their eyes.  Wiping their face daily will help prevent this buildup.  It is also good to keep the hair around the eyes pulled back or short as this will stop the hair from irritating their eyes or obscuring their much important vision.

Are Teacup Yorkies a real thing?

These phrases refer to extremely tiny Yorkshire Terriers, and ask any breeder, in NZ, there is no such thing.  In many countries, this is a made-up marketing term to allow the unsuspecting owner to believe they are getting something extra special.  It should often be noted that very, very tiny Yorkies can also have health issues, and certainly in NZ, be cautious if anyone leads with this type of advertising.
